I walked in the door of the Jan de Jong dojo looking for a martial art that could help me practice mindfulness. The Jan de Jong dojo community that Maggie Sensei and Paul Sensei have gathered around them is welcoming and inclusive and every time I walk through that door I know I am in the right place.
Thank you, Maggie, for running a fantastic self-defence course for girls over the school holidays. My girls were at first very reluctant, but after I convinced them to join the course, they now agree that it was both worthwhile and enjoyable. I think my girls discovered a new confidence in the way they can use their bodies and their voices to deal with confronting situations. I'm hoping my kids will never have to use the skills that you have taught them, but it gives me some comfort to know that they have a few tricks in their back pocket after the course.
I started training in self defence mid 2002. Two of the main reasons I chose to train at Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness was its well respected reputation and the high level of martial arts knowledge displayed by its instructors. I found my instructor, Paul Connolly sensei, to be a person of high integrity and professionalism.
Our eight year old son, who is on the spectrum, has been doing Ju Jutsu classes with Maggie and Paul for two years. Under Maggie's calm and skilled tutelage, our son has learnt to listen respectfully, focus and concentrate, and has developed sequencing, gross motor and self-defence skills. Maggie and Paul provide an engaging and supportive instructive environment, where they presume competence and all students are encouraged to learn and achieve to the best of their ability. It has been wonderful to see him welcomed into an inclusive community that celebrates his strengths and unique qualities.
Having worked for many years in social work and as a mentor, I am aware of how difficult it can be to gain trust and support positive changes. I have been working with a young man who was all but given up on by mental health services. The training at Jan de Jong has been transformative.
I recently engaged the services of Jan de Jong Martial Arts Fitness to provide nine weeks of self defence training for two groups of 15 people. The program was very successful and I highly recommend the services to anyone seriously considering learning self defence or wishing to improve their risk management profile.
We have been a part of Jan de Jong Dojo for the past 5 years, and it has been a greatly positive and rewarding experience for both of my sons and family. All of the Sensei, and in particular Sensei Maggie, are incredible, especially when dealing with children. They work to develop students physically, mentally and spiritually, and are encouraging, extremely patient, caring and genuinely interested in each child. The Dojo has a family feel that is very warm and welcoming to both new and existing students.
Being someone of more advanced years, I find, apart from the obvious advantage of receiving instruction in a sophisticated and effective self defence system, that there are other valuable benefits. Fitness, agility and the desire to continually learn are important things to maintain as we get older.
I have been a student with Jan de Jong for 12 years. It has been rewarding on many levels. I have learned effective self-defence skills based on the art of jujutsu, which is particularly suited to me as it emphasises efficiency over power. I will not hesitate to recommend Jan de Jong as a means to personal growth.
