Aikido 合気道

Emphasis on smooth, flowing and circular movements with dynamic and practical application. Solutions against punches, kicks and weapons within traditional principles.

What Is Aikido?

The Art of Harmonious Energy

Aikido, meaning "the way of harmonious spirit," uses an attacker's own energy against them through circular, flowing movements.

Founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 20th century, Aikido is derived from traditional Japanese martial arts, particularly Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu. Unlike many martial arts that rely on strength and aggression, Aikido focuses on redirecting force and maintaining balance.

At Jan De Jong Martial Arts, our Aikido training emphasizes both the traditional spiritual aspects and practical self-defence applications. Students learn to blend with and redirect attacks using joint locks and throws.
